AngeliaSendTM - On-Line Help - Tips And Tuning

Like most things in life, dealing with E-Mail and Outlook has some hidden complexities.  This document is intended to pass along some of what we've learned while developing AngeliaSend.  We hope it's useful and saves you some time and energy.

Performance Estimates - just how fast is AngeliaSend? How long should it take to send 1,000 E-Mails?  AngeliaSend makes a copy of your reference E-Mail message for each of your designated recipients and puts those messages in your Outlook Outbox.  On a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop running Windows XP and Outlook 2003, 1,142 E-Mails (each about 11kb in size) were created and submitted to Outlook to send in just over 90 seconds.  Using a Verizon FIOS internet connection and Earthlink's SMTP servers, another 2 minutes was consumed in sending the E-Mails.  If your CPU is faster or slower, or if your E-Mail message is larger or smaller, or your internet connection is faster or slower, or your ISP has different rules, then your results could vary significantly.

What's the maximum number of E-Mails I can send in one "Campaign Send"? - Once again, the answer to this question is a moving target because it is affected by several factors.  First, the maximum number you can send at once is governed by how much disk space you want to have occupied (even temporarily) by messages in your Outbox.  Using the example above of 1,142 pieces at 11kb each, the disk space required to queue up those messages is about 12.5mb (not much of a problem).  However, if your E-Mail piece is 100kb, which is pretty easy to get to if you have any images or attachments, the same 1,142 pieces translates to more than 100mb of disk.  An even more important factor are the rules that your ISP has in place governing the sending of E-Mails.  Free E-Mail services like Hotmail and GMail often have very strict limits such as a maximum of 25 or 50 E-Mails sent in a 24 hour period.  On the other hand, a paid E-Mail account may well allow you to send any reasonable number of E-Mails without any difficulty.  We sent the 1,142 E-Mails in the test mentioned above on 3 different occasions without any problems at all using a paid Earthlink account.  Our suggestion is that you start small (100 or so) and see what happens.  Then increase the size of your batch in reasonable steps and see what, if any, difficulties you encounter.  And if you run into a problem, please contact us and let us know what you're running into so that we can try to help diagnose and resolve the problem.
