AngeliaSyncTM - On-Line Help - Selecting A Target Folder And Related Options

Once you have selected a Source Folder to process, AngeliaSync will need to know the destination (target) folder for your copy.  If you are using the Simple Interface (the default when you first install AngeliaSync) then select your target folder from the "My Computer" display on the right side of the main form.  Note that the Simple Interface supports only path names that begin with a drive letter.  For UNC paths you must use the Advanced Interface.

To select your target folder, click on any of the "+" symbols to expand that branch of the folder tree or click on an of the "-" symbols to collapse the branch.  Select the desired folder by clicking on it in the "My Computer" tree.  The full path name of the selected folder will be displayed in the area immediately below the "My Computer" display.  It will be surrounded by yellow if a folder has not been selected or by green if a folder is selected.

If your target folder does not already exist, the Simple Interface allows you to create it by fist selecting the folder in which it is to be located, and then clicking the "create a new target folder" button on the lower right of the main form. Note that this button will be disabled if you have not yet selected a location using the target folder "My Computer" display. The "Create A New Folder" dialog will be shown (an example is shown on the left edge of this page), allowing you to enter a name for your new folder.  Click "Apply" to create your folder or "Cancel" to return to the main form without creating it.

If you are using the optional "Advanced Interface" then you can type in the path name of your target folder in the area on the main form titled "Select Target Folder" - or you can click the button with the ellipsis ("...") on the right side of the Target Folder entry area.  Clicking this button will display the "Select Target Folder" dialog (an example is on the left side of this page) which will show you a folder list for your computer.  Click on any of the "+" symbols to expand that branch of the folder tree or click on any of the "-" symbols to collapse that branch.

The Select Target Folder Dialog also permits you to create a new folder for your target. First, select the folder in which you want your new folder created and then click the "Create Folder" button at the top of the form.  A new folder will appear (entitled "New Folder") that you can then rename to suit.

There are a number of additional options that impact your target folder selection or the manner in which it is processed.  When using the Simple Interface, click the "Processing Options" button after selecting your source and target folders to see a short list of items that you can change.  If you are using the Advanced Interface, the Processing Options are presented in a list immediately below the Source Folder and Target Folder area of the form.

A Processing Option is selected if the box to the left of the name in the list contains a blue "check mark".  To "check" an option, click the box -- click it again to uncheck it.  For additional help on any option, select the option by clicking on it (the item will be displayed in a blue background) and then right-click it.

The Processing Options that apply to the Target Folder are:

  • Perform Full (Both Ways) Synchronization - select this option if you want AngeliaSync to perform a "Full Synchronization" - in which case the Source Folder (and sub-folders if selected) will be processed first and the Target Folder brought up to date followed immediately by the synchronization process being repeated updating the Source Folder from the Target. If this option is not selected, the synchronization will be run only from Source to Target. (Advanced Interface Only)
  • Create Missing Source Folders In Target - select this option if you want AngeliaSync to create any source sub-folders in the target that do not already exist.  If this option is not selected, only the files contained folders that already exist will be considered for processing.
  • Create Missing Source Files In Target - select this option if you want AngeliaSync to create any source files in the target that do not already exist.  If this option is not selected, only files that already exist in the target folder tree will be considered for processing.
  • Overwrite Target Files Even If They Are Up-To-Date - select this option if you want AngeliaSync to process files that are already up-to-date.  If this option is not selected, any up-to-date files will be ignored.
  • Retain Source File And Folder Attributes In Target - select this option if you want AngeliaSync to apply the file system attributes of the source to the target. These attributes include "Archive", "Read-Only", "System", and "Hidden".  If this option is not selected, target folders and files will not have any of the above attributes set regardless of the attributes of the corresponding source folder or file. (Advanced Interface Only)
  • Create Rolling Target Archive By Day Of The Week - select this option if you want AngeliaSync to create a sub-folder in your target folder for the day of the week on which the process is run. This will eventually result in a full set of sub-folders named "Monday", "Tuesday", etc - each containing an entire source folder tree. A "Rolling Archive" allows you to go back and access a copy of a file as it was in the past (up to the depth of the archive - 7 days in this case). This is extremely useful for certain types of files (such as program source files).  If this option is not selected, only one set of files will be created under the target folder. (Advanced Interface Only)
  • Ask Operator Prior To Each File Update Attempt - select this option if you want AngeliaSync to ask the operator for permission on a file-by-file basis before updating any files.  If this option is not selected, any file or folder that is eligible for update will be updated without further intervention. (Advanced Interface Only)
